φ: the mathematical beauty of Twitter's new design

Being a sucker for layout and typography, this really makes me happy in my gentleman's department.

#newtwitter, while it has its quirks and isn't the most responsive website (at least in IE8) is a great improvement in user experience, and it also happens to look very nice indeed. Turns out, there's mathematical sense behind it.

The Golden Ratio is a funny ol' ratio, long beloved of designers and mathematicians. Coming in at about 1.618 and usually written as the lowercase phi (φ) it represents an intuitively pleasant ratio with some cool mathematical properties. Check this out:

φ^2 = φ+1

Twitter have elected to define their column widths and the alignment of the major Tweet block according to this ratio, which I think is just plain awesome.

At least to Western eyes, these proportions look beautiful. They feel like a balanced, natural distribution, so it's no surprise that #newtwitter makes such a well-weighted impression at first glance.

Well done.
