September, 1978: Boba Fett makes his public debut in... a sunbaked San Anselmo parade.

Though he wouldn't become a geek icon until his appearance in The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, intergalactic bounty hunter Boba Fett first graced the small screen in the atrocious 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special.

The public's first glimpse, however, came two weeks earlier, when he flanked Darth Vader in the sweltering heat of San Anselmo, leading a parade for... something or whatever.

More geeky trivia: the badass busted-up costume originated as a design for the Imperial 'Super Trooper'. Is white the new black?

Otters are excitable little blighters, jumping and squeaking like they want to be the first to answer Teacher's question.

Me! Me! Oooh! Pick me! I know! Me!

Otters are cute. I'll just come out and say it. They're adorable.

On the menu tonight: a sweet Turkish treat!

Dates filled with goat's cheese, ready to go in the oven. Serve as a treat or dessert. The contrast between the sweet date and the tart, salty cheese is an absolute delight to the palate. Growing up in Amsterdam among Turks and Moroccans has left it's mark on my extremely limited culinary talents. Mmm, these are going to be delicious :)

Third Eurofurence panel video: Anthropomorphic comics publishing with Yours F. Truly, Dark Natasha and Rukis

http://www.youtube.com/p/1DB88520D30429CA?hl=en_US&fs=1

Apologies for the ghastly audio; I've cleaned it up as best I could. I'd mic'ed myself up really poorly so the only usable audio source was the camera. Sorry!

Nightfox from Black Paw Publications was originally going to join us, but was indisposed due to scheduling issues -- but nonetheless, this turned out to be a very good panel.

I was joined by Dark Natasha and Rukis, both furry artists, so there was a fairly heavy slant toward comics rather than fiction. Nonetheless we were impressed with some very good and well-targeted questions from our fabulous and intimate audience!

Three-lane electric marathon... Hamster wheel? FUCK YEAH

I snapped this being erected (hurr durr) outside the airport/trainstation that's the hub of my daily commute. Unless it's a deceptive piece of dumbass art, this appears to be an electrically-driven three-lane marathon hamster wheel. I so want a turn!

As-Salāmu `Alaykum, baby!

What a show-off.

Meet Buck Trailer: hail to the antlers, baby.

http://player.vimeo.com/video/13681161?portrait=0

Aaand let's follow that up with the trailer for an upcoming short in much the same zany, CGI-used-right cartoon style with a handsome buck for a hero.

The Bouyer boys sure do have some talent brewing, don't they?

Salesman Pete: awesome, awesome independent short cartoon

http://player.vimeo.com/video/15126262?portrait=0

"Pete is a nice and clumsy salesman. But he's also a deadly super secret agent with a microprocessor implanted into his brain by some mad scientists from the governement ! He has to secretly stop a bunch of badguys who stole a magic stone that can change anything into seafood!"

Wonderful stuff!

Bruce Wayne takes a shower with Dick on his mind

These Bruce / Dick jokes never get tired.

And Robin is such a *saucy* little harlot, isn't she?

Criminally cute: little girl plays with otters

What do we take away from this?

Girls can apparently run faster than otters either can or prefer to swim, but otters can wield their impressive aquatic desterity to match her hand-waving with the swaying and lurching of their noses.

Can I get a d'aww?

"Slytherin my bed, you Gryffinwhore, and put on your robe and wizard hat."

There are, right this second, quite a few mature, appropriately-aged and sexually attractive individuals in this world whose childhood included Harry Potter the way mine included Transformers and He-Man.

Makes you think.

PS: This may not be construed as a tacitly admitting I have had fantasies involving characters ore vents from the Transformers cartoons.

PPS: He-Man may be another matter. Prince Adam was quite the fetching li'l hardbody in his adorable bobcut.

A cautionary sign for English parents.

Hiroshima and the Mosler Safe Company: Vault Beats Nuke.

Five years after the Enola Gay dropped her 'gizmo' payload on the city of Hiroshima, the Teikoku Bank's management sent this letter of praise to the Mosler Safe Company.

While the city had been laid waste, the Mosler-built safety vault in the (destroyed, later rebuilt) Teikoku Bank branch in Hiroshima protected its contents perfectly.

There's an eerie enlightenment to the letter, where the Teikoku representative, a mere five years after the obliteration of the city and on the verge of re-opening their business, discusses the bomb as if it was something that 'happened' rather than an act that was committed. Almost as if it was a tragic act of nature.

"Estamos bien en el regufio los 33": Survival in a collapsed coppermine has a 3.19 inch diameter.

32 Chilean miners and one Bolivian have been trapped in a copper-gold mine in Copiapó since the roof of the mine collapsed on August 5 this year, where they will remain trapped until a secure rescue passage can be drilled -- a process which will take months.

Until then, their only link with the outside world is through three tiny boreholes that were drilled into the area where they are confined. Through these, the supplies necessary to keep these men alive, healthy and sane are delivered to them in canisters only slightly bigger than a beer can.

Ramadan vs Porno: A Victor Emerges (in Moroccan internet traffic)

It's so heartening to see that a ritual aimed at cleansing the spirit is taken seriously even in the privacy and anonymity of the internet, even though Moroccan hearts pump blood as red as the rest of ours and their hankering for a vicarious titillation snaps right back to prior levels right after month's end.

Ganked from the boys at ILoveCharts, sadly without a trail back to the original source, so I don't have access to the rest of the graph or an explanation for the lettered callouts.

2005 seems to have been an especially, er, 'active' year for the Moroccans. What happened in the psring and summer that got 'em so randy? Anyone have an idea?

Go on. You know you want to.

A glimpse of Maranatha City by AlectorFencer

We held off on sharing this for quite a while, so as not to give people the false impression that the third book actually takes place in the ruined City, but now that the debut is over and done with, it's time to show off.

Alectorfencer contributed only one page to Heathen City Vol. 3, but it's a beaut. Here, we see the first vision of Maranatha City as it is 'today'...

Second Eurofurence video: editing for publication in the small press

http://www.youtube.com/p/4F8E1DB7977B5876?hl=en_US&fs=1

(Full-length Vimeo version to be added when I'm allowed to upload it again, goddammit)

This workshop was a little dryer than the one about writers, artists, imagery and meaning, but more informative for writers and in much, much higher quality!

Occasionally you'll hear the camera guys whispering, and there was quite a bit of noise outside in the first few minutes, but I think it came out quite good anyway.

It was a nicely intimate affair, where I put on my Editor hat to give the collected writers a glimpse into the world of story review, selection, editing from the other side of the glass.

Full video of the first writing panel I gave at Eurofurence 16 last week: writers vs artists

http://player.vimeo.com/video/14779568?portrait=0

Presented by Yours F. Truly at Eurofurence 16 in Magdeburg, Germany in September 2010. In this workshop we discuss the notion of conveying meaning through imagery. The theory of semiotics is briskly breezed through, after which we look at some examples of evocative imagery in art and writing. Finally, we did a little mini Bullwer-Lytton contest, with some thoughtful and/or hilarious results!

Apologies for the darkness in the first half. The camera lost focus in the dark a few times, but really came into its element once the lights came back on. This panel was a ton of fun to do, with a diverse and engaged audience, which included Elfasi, Watts Martin, Lupestripe and a fair few others I'm sure I forgot to name!

Across the Dutch border!

Aaand we're returning home after a wonderful time at Eurofurence! Big thanks to the hardworking staff, the city of Magdeburg, and the fabulous fanboys and -girls that make this community what it is. We still have about three hours of train travel ahead of us, having just endured four rather stressful hours already, so wish me luck!
