The rise and fall of 3D Cinema: Is it a fad after all?

Because my left eye is a douchebag I'm unable to perceive 3D cinema. The experience is merely uncomfortable, as I wear goofy glasses over my normal glasses, get a headache, and am frequently baffled by dark scenes because the glasses dim the image and I'm also slightly nightblind.

I'm sure 3D is neat and all, for people who can actually see it. I can't quite imagine people being willing to endure the discomfort, not to mention unfashionable humiliation, on a very regular basis.

Autostereoscopy, though limited in its applications, could well be popular, though. The 3DS seems promising! At least it won't require goofy glasses -- and for the depthblind like myself, there's a switch to turn the effect off entirely. Well done, Nintendo!

  1. You really aren't missing anything, save for maybe a little extra background. 3D films are absolutely pointless unless they interact with the audience, which is exactly what NONE of the recent 3D films have done. The most you could expect to see from them is a little extra background behind the characters, and dimmer colors due to the 3D movie glasses.
